Matrix
I understand why I was pressured to watch this movie. Although it's old, I have never seen it. The concept is fantastic and brings certain philosophical questions to mind. Would you choose a false life of happiness if you could be ignorant of a tragic reality? What makes reality so special that you would choose it over happiness? Keanu Reeves did a great job in this movie, but I wasn't impressed with the romantic subplot. It seemed unrealistic and too quick to be genuine. All in all, great movie. Highly recommended.
Pan's Labyrinth
I knew the movie was originally in Spanish but I expected it to be dubbed. Not the case. I got a chance to practice listening to Spanish which I haven't done in a long time. This movie was depressing but very well done. Set in Franco's Spain, the movie charts the life of Ofelia who creates an imaginary world to deal with some of the traumas of her real life. When Ofelia dies in the end, her death is bittersweet. You know in reality that she has been brutally murdered by the cruel general, but her fantasy world is so strong that she believes she has gone to join her dead parents in a magical kingdom. In a sense, this happy ending, where she gets to be the princess of her fairy tales overshadows the dark truth; viewers get the sense that even this imaginary world is happier than her real life.
