So after much encouragement I finally started reading the Game of Thrones books. Book 1 took me a while to get through but it was very good. I highly recommend everyone to start reading the books now. My favorite character in the series would have have to be Arya Stark; she is spunky and intelligent and hopefully the plot surrounding her character will strengthen in the next book. The way Arya deals with everything from her encounter with Prince Joffrey and the death of her father may lack poise, but reeks of determination, intelligence and a will to survive the game of thrones taking over the land.
The complexity of the villains-heroes relationship in this book can occasionally leave you confused as to who to root for. Tyrion Lannister should be all means be hated because of his powerful familial bond to the Lannisters, yet something about the dwarf makes him lovable. Sansa is another character that should be loved because she is a Stark, but her stupidity and poor decision making force readers to view her with some kind of disdain.
This book derives clear influences from Lord of the Rings in the layout of the land and some of the mythical beasts. I also found this book to be influenced by William Shakespeare. Cersei Lannister is reminiscent of Lady Macbeth, Robb Stark seems like Henry IV - thrust into a position of power before he is quite ready. Jon Snow has tortured characteristics of Hamlet; he feels out of place and distraught about his identity and relationship to his family. Arya is like many of Shakespeare's characters, out of place with her expected role as a woman and forced to disguise herself as a man. Many of the villains are desperate for power, like many of Shakespeare's villains and I'm interested to see how the comparisons play out in the remainder of the series.
